Mapfre to pay one million euros to employee dismissed after nepotism complaint

The scandal over the dismissal of a Mapfre lawyer in Madrid ends with a record compensation

A lawyer with 34 years of service at Mapfre received €1.15 million after being dismissed for reporting nepotism. The court ruled the company’s actions were repressive. Authorities and Mapfre declined to comment on the details.

A scandal has erupted in Spain over the dismissal of a lawyer who had worked for more than three decades within Mapfre. The company agreed to pay him €1.15 million after he reported possible nepotism in the appointment of a director at a joint venture involving the Alcalá de Henares municipality. The decision on compensation was made right before a court hearing, where the former employee argued that his dismissal was a direct response to an internal complaint.

Internal complaint and consequences

The core of the conflict is linked to the 2020 hiring of a Mapfre board advisor’s son as deputy director at Cementerio Jardín de Alcalá de Henares, a company where 51% is owned by the city and 49% by a Mapfre subsidiary. Within a year, the young employee became director and received a double pay raise. According to the former board secretary, the recruitment process was a formality: the competition was tailored for a specific candidate, and the commission members were dependent on his father.

After the company adopted an anti-corruption policy in December 2024, the lawyer invoked the new whistleblower protection law and filed an official complaint. A month later, he was dismissed, and his attempt to return to the office ended with security intervening. In the year following the incident, the former employee faced serious health consequences and continues to receive treatment.

Response of Mapfre and the authorities

Mapfre and the administration of Alcalá de Henares refused to disclose the details of the tender or clarify whether transparency and equal access requirements were met. In an official statement, Mapfre claims the dismissal is not related to the complaint, and any reports of violations are always investigated through established channels. However, the question of why the company agreed to such a large compensation remains unanswered.

The municipality, in turn, stated that it does not control the daily management of the enterprise and does not possess full information about staffing decisions made in 2020–2021. The former mayor, now a deputy, placed responsibility on the private partner, emphasizing that it was Mapfre who initiated both the dismissal and the appointment of the director.

Consequences for whistleblowers

The story became public at an event in Madrid dedicated to whistleblower protection. A former Mapfre lawyer said that after filing his complaint, he lost 15 kilograms and was forced to take medication. According to him, pressure from the employer continued until the very last moment. The Whistleblower Protection Law, passed in Spain three years ago, prohibits any reprisals against applicants, but in practice, protection often turns out to be purely formal.

The scandal involving the dismissal and compensation at Mapfre became one of the most notable cases of the new law’s application. Questions about transparency and accountability in joint ventures involving municipalities remain unresolved. Similar stories have already been the subject of investigations, as was the case with the private inquiry into the ERE affair, previously reported in the article about hiring Leire Díez to search for connections with Villarejo.
