In Spain, preparing for official public legal competitions is a lengthy and costly process. For many, finances become the main obstacle on the path to becoming a judge, prosecutor, or state attorney. The new Becas SERÉ program, launched by the Ministry of the Presidency, Justice, and Relations with the Cortes, aims to change this situation by providing targeted financial support to those who are truly committed to a career in the justice system.
Who can apply for Becas SERÉ
The program is aimed at candidates preparing for entrance exams to the judiciary and prosecutor’s office, as well as positions of letrados de la Administración de Justicia and Abogacía del Estado. Key requirements for applicants: Spanish citizenship, legal age, a higher legal education, no criminal record, and no outstanding debts with the tax authority or social security system. Special consideration is given to those whose family’s financial situation objectively makes years of preparation for these competitions difficult.
Amount and structure of support
Each recipient is granted up to €12,600 per year. For future judges and prosecutors, there is a special scheme: €9,000 is paid directly to the candidate, and another €3,600 goes to cover the mentor’s work, who oversees the training process. This approach not only eases the financial burden but also provides access to professional mentors, which is especially important for residents of small towns and regions where specialized training centers may not be available.
Application process and deadlines
Applications for the program can be submitted entirely online through a dedicated section on the Center for Legal Studies website. Document submission is already open and will close on May 7 at 15:00. The training format is mostly in-person, but for those unable to find a mentor in their region, there is an option for remote learning. This solution makes the competitions more accessible to candidates from all parts of the country, regardless of their initial opportunities.
Equal opportunities and social mission
Becas SERÉ is not just financial support, but a tool for leveling the playing field for those who face genuine obstacles on the path to a legal career. The program emphasizes the importance of social mobility and seeks to remove barriers that have long restricted access to professions within the justice system. As Talent24h notes, such initiatives are becoming increasingly relevant amid growing interest in public sector competitions and the need to renew staff in key legal institutions.
Issues of supporting young professionals and creating new opportunities for career development are becoming increasingly important in Spain. For example, the CULTUREX program discussed in the article on international internships for young professionals in culture, is also aimed at expanding access to prestigious professions. Such projects are shaping a new dynamic in the labor market and opening up additional prospects for those ready to invest in their professional future.
